Ulsoor Lake

One of the oldest neighborhoods in Bangalore City, Ulsoor is famous for its man made lake known as Ulsoor Lake. Before we know more about the lake let us know a bit about the neighborhood and how it and the lake came into existence. 

Ulsoor is an anglicized name of Halasuru or Halasina Hannu meaning orchard of jackfruits. The place during the British reign was famous for its jackfruit yard which gave it its name. The Ulsoor Lake is one of the largest man made lakes in Bangalore and is the only lake left that was constructed by Kempe Gowda.

Located in the eastern center of the city, the Ulsoor Lake is one of the finest tourist locations of the city. More than the tourists it is the locals who make the best use of this beautiful place. An ideal destination for office going people to relax and relieve them of the tension, the Ulsoor Lake has all the ingredients for a perfectly calm and tranquil evening.

The lake is beautifully constructed and is extremely pleasant to the eye. A person visiting this place has various options such as rowing across its surface, relaxing on the grassy banks and visiting one of the many small islands that are placed within the lake. The lake is one of the best scenic destinations in the country which is evident from the fact that a lot of movies are shot here. The best time that one could visit this lake during the evenings where one can witness the sunset over the lake. The beauty of this moment in the lake is better seen than told about. Ulsoor Lake Boating

The lake authorities offer boat rides to all those who are keen about it. The boating club located in the place help people traverse the various islands in the lake. One can choose from a variety of boats available starting from rowing boats to motor boats. The rowing boats are a bit more exclusive and allow one to have a lazy time around the lake. The motor boats are faster and suits people who want visit the place for a stop gap pass time and want all the responsibilities off their hands.

The lake is accessible the entire year and one can visit the lake almost anytime of the year. The rainy season should preferably be avoided. But it is during the months of August and September that one will be able to witness a Ganesh festival that takes place near the lake. For religious people there is another gurudwara that is present nearby. This shrine is considered the biggest Sikh shrine in the entire country making it a prestigious landmark beside the lake. It is highly recommended that one visits this shrine without fail.

The British Military building next to the lake is also of historical significance as it remains the only few buildings of the neighborhood built during the British reign. Tourists can find a lot of comfortable accommodation options around the neighborhood and the fact that this is close to the shopping center of the city M.G. Road makes it the most suitable place to find a hotel.
